We won the design and construct tender from United Nations to restore and transform the historic former convent into a new faculty for the University of Aruba, with a focus on Sustainable Strategies tailored to small island states.
Our work began with meticulous historical research of the convent, mapping the construction chronology and its architectural characteristics—many of which had never been documented before. On Aruba all historic monuments must be restored to their original color, so a chromatic analysis was performed to uncover the building's original color, adding authenticity to the restoration process. The structure, originally the island’s first public school in 1919, had evolved through seven distinct phases, eventually becoming the landmark known as the monument Maria Convent.
We developed a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation plan, preserving the convent’s rich history while reimagining its future as a cutting-edge educational space. While the plan also included an extension for a modern laboratory, this element was not realized. In addition an interior and furniture was developed which mirrored the faculty’s sustainable ambition (not realised) together with a landscaping plan which honors local flora.
This project embodied a sensitive balance between conservation, innovation, and sustainability, ensuring the building continues to inspire and serve future generations.
